November 2008 – Research Mission to Tunis

Ali in Tunis, Tunisia  On a side-street in downtown Tunis sits a small, faded Hebrew plaque, all that remains of the tomb of 18th-century Chief Rabbi Messaoud Raphael el Fassi. According to tradition, the rabbi set off on a caravan bound for Jerusalem from his native city of Fez but only made it as far as Tunis, where he lived until he died in 1775. Diarna researcher, Ali Kaba, captured remarkable pictures of this site and others during a photographic expedition to Tunis. See two of his photos along with a photo rescued from an archive for comparison:

Praise for Diarna

The Diarna project is a long overdue and invaluable undertaking that will enable this and future generations to recapture the rapidly disappearing record of the millennial travels of the Jewish people. — Rabbi Maurice S. Corson, President Emeritus, The Wexner Foundation
