Raphy Elmaleh in the Medinah of Meknes, Morocco Raphy Elmaleh in the Medinah of Meknes, Morocco

The January 27 edition of Morocco’s best-selling weekly magazine, TelQuel, features a profile of Diarna advisor Raphael (Raphy) Elmaleh. The article, in French, recounts the remarkable story of how Raphy became Morocco’s only Jewish tour guide. It also describes his work with young Muslims eager to discover shared communal history, as well as his efforts to restore ancient synagogues in the Berber villages of Southern Morocco.

You can join Raphy for virtual tours via Diarna, including of Jewish sites in Tighedouine (located amidst the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains), the mellah of Ourzazate (the “gateway to the Sahara”), and the 500 year-old tomb of Rabbi Shlomo ben Lhans (in the Ourika Valley, south of Marrakesh).

Praise for Diarna

Diarna’s ability to give contemporary voice to an important aspect of Jewish history, while successfully collaborating with other institutions, distinguishes it as an emerging leader in the field. I feel a great sense of pride knowing that Diarna, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Arab-Jewish history, exists with such eloquence and relevancy in today’s technological world. — Dana Raucher, Executive Director of The Samuel Bronfman Foundation
