August 2008 – Research Mission to Southern Morocco

Ancient Jewish Cemetery, Oufrane, Morocco

A research team canvassed southern Morocco locating unusual Jewish sites on the edge of the Sahara Desert.

Sites surveyed include a legendary 2,000 year Berber Jewish synagogue, the former home of the prominent mystical rabbi known as the Baba Sali, and the tomb of a rabbi guarded by a solitary Jewish “monk” in the Atlas mountains, south of Marrakesh.

The team also conducted interviews with local Muslim caretakers who look after many of the sites. See photos from the expedition below:

Praise for Diarna

Diarna’s ability to give contemporary voice to an important aspect of Jewish history, while successfully collaborating with other institutions, distinguishes it as an emerging leader in the field. I feel a great sense of pride knowing that Diarna, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Arab-Jewish history, exists with such eloquence and relevancy in today’s technological world. — Dana Raucher, Executive Director of The Samuel Bronfman Foundation
