October 2009 – A Tour of Home: Tighedouine

Rapheal Elmaleh, Morocco’s only Jewish tour guide and a research advisor to Diarna, explores a village in Tighedouine, Morocco, located amidst the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains. See two abandoned Jewish cemeteries that were nearly built over by a European real estate company, tour a former Berber Jewish home, hear local Muslims’ memories of their Jewish neighbors, and explore inside an abandoned olive press once used by Jews. Install the Google Earth plug-in so you can follow along virtually with Raphy below. Double-click to see the site in context with a landscape view. After visiting a site, zoom out for a regional view and then double-click on the next site.

Praise for Diarna

A virtual unearthing of Jewish history in the middle and near east. A great conservation and historical preservation work. Congratulations. — Dhia A. Habboush, Ph.D, a native of Basra, Iraq
